Keep the view, lose the pickets

If your deck faces the North Shore mountains, the harbour or even just a nice backyard, wood or aluminum pickets chop that view into slices. Glass doesn't. From the couch or the barbecue, a clear glass railing reads as almost nothing — which is exactly the point.

There's a practical side too. A solid glass panel works as a windbreak, so a breezy deck stays comfortable later into the fall, and it stops leaves and blowing rain from sweeping straight across. Homeowners also tell us the resale angle matters: a clean glass railing photographs well and signals a finished, updated home.

Frameless or post-and-clamp?

Two systems cover almost every project:

• Frameless. Thick tempered-laminated panels set into a continuous base shoe or individual spigots, with no posts at all. The cleanest look and the best view — and the higher-end option.
• Post-and-clamp. Slimmer panels held by clamps on stainless posts. More budget-friendly, still open and modern, and a good match for long deck runs.

We'll show you both when we measure and tell you honestly which suits your deck, your wind exposure and your budget. Some frameless setups add a slim top rail; others run bare-edge. There are trade-offs either way, and we've installed enough of both to walk you through them.

Safety glass and the BC Building Code

Railing glass isn't ordinary window glass. Every panel we install is tempered, and where the application calls for it, laminated as well — two sheets bonded to a clear interlayer, so even a broken panel stays in one piece and in place. Panel thickness is matched to the height of the guard and the length of the span.

Once a deck or landing sits more than a couple of feet above grade, the BC Building Code requires a guard, and it sets rules for guard height and the loads a railing must resist. We build to those requirements as a matter of course, and we can provide the specs your strata or inspector asks for.

Interior stair railings

Inside the house, a glass railing changes how a whole floor feels. Swapping spindle railings for glass on a staircase or landing lets light move through the house and opens up sightlines — it pairs naturally with open-riser stairs and modern renos. It's the same tempered safety glass we use in our shower enclosures, cut and polished to fit each run.

Parents like it for a reason you might not expect: there are no horizontal rails to climb and no gaps for a small head to get stuck in. A microfibre cloth keeps fingerprints under control.

Exterior hardware takes a beating here — wind-driven rain on the North Shore, salt air in White Rock and along the water. We spec stainless hardware suited to exposed locations, and glass that shrugs off the weather: a squeegee or a quick hose after a storm is most of the maintenance.
