Tinted Glass Against Dark Stone
Clear glass is the default, but it isn't always the right call. Against dark marble or slate, lightly tinted or smoked glass reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a panel someone forgot to clean — and it hides water spotting far better than clear glass does.
Matte black hardware has become the standard partner for this look: hinges, handles and channel all disappear into the stone instead of glinting against it. The trade-off is honest — a darker enclosure makes a small bathroom read smaller, so it suits rooms with decent natural light or a good overhead fixture.
Every enclosure we build uses 10mm tempered safety glass as standard, whatever the finish. It's the thickness that lets a frameless panel stand on minimal hardware without flex.
Shower glass questions
How much does a frameless shower door cost?
It depends on the glass area, the hardware finish and how square your walls are. A single hinged door in a standard alcove is the low end; a full frameless enclosure with a return panel, notched glass and specialty hardware is considerably more. Every quote is free and itemized before glass is ordered, because tempered glass is made to measure and can't be cut afterwards.
How long does the whole process take?
Usually two visits about a week to ten days apart. The first is templating — we measure the actual opening, including how far out of plumb the walls are. The glass is then fabricated to that template, which takes several business days. Installation itself is typically a few hours.
Can you replace just the glass in my existing enclosure?
Often, yes — if the hardware is sound and the glass simply broke or got scratched. Where it gets harder is older or discontinued systems, because the panel has to match the original hardware cut-outs exactly. Send us a photo of the hinges and we'll tell you quickly whether it's a swap or a rebuild.
Why does my shower glass look cloudy no matter how I clean it?
That's usually etching, not dirt. Hard water minerals attack the glass surface over years and leave permanent marks that no cleaner will lift. Light etching sometimes polishes out; heavy etching means new glass. A protective coating applied to new glass slows it down considerably — squeegeeing after each shower does the rest.
Do frameless doors leak?
A properly built one doesn't, but it's a real question because frameless enclosures have no track at the bottom. The water control comes from the door swing, the slope of the curb or pan, and small clear seals along the vertical edge. Get the pan slope wrong and no amount of sealing fixes it — which is why we check it during templating.
Is tempered glass required in a shower?
Yes. The BC Building Code requires safety glazing in bathing enclosures, and every panel we install is 10mm tempered as standard. If it breaks it crumbles into blunt pebbles rather than shards, which is exactly what you want in a wet room with bare feet.
What warranty and insurance do you carry?
Sealed units carry a 10-year warranty against seal failure, and our workmanship is warranted for one year from installation. Sparkle Glass Ltd. is in good standing with WorkSafeBC and carries liability insurance — certificates are available on request for property managers, strata councils and commercial clients.
